THE DAY OF PENTECOST
Sunday, May 11

Services of Holy Eucharist
at 8 and 10 a.m.

Pentecost, literally the "fiftieth day," is celebrated the 49th day (7 weeks) after Easter. It is symbolically related to the Jewish harvest festival of Shavuot and marks the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and followers of Jesus as described in the second chapter of the Book of Acts. Pentecost, also called Whitsunday, is considered the 'birthday of the church." Altar hangings are changed to red, and everyone is encouraged to wear something red to commemorate this festive Sunday.
